    AS a young football fan growing up in Chesterville in Durban, watching the Iwisa Charity Spectacular meant seeing one familiar face: pre-event, during the event itself and post-event - Leepile Taunyane.

    His gentle, comforting features were synonymous with the now defunct one-day, four-team season-opening spectacular.

    Unfortunately, we will never see that face again.

    As a journalist, the death of the Charity Spectacular was one of the saddest events of my life. The tournament was born as the Iwisa Spectacular. It had morphed into the Telkom Charity when it met its untimely death three years ago.

    But for decades we simply called it Charity because all proceedings went to help those among our society who cannot help themselves: orphanages, old-age homes and such-like.

    Taunyane's soft hands that gave away those cheques will never be felt again.
